RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUPS
What are the recovery support groups?
The purpose of the recovery support group is to provide support for those who struggle with addictions. Because honesty and consistency are keys to recovery, members are encouraged to share their story of their addictive behaviour. By sharing their story, members help themselves and others in the group to learn about recovery.
Who can attend?
  • People who are concerned about their drug or alcohol use.
  • People who have an addiction to behaviours such as gambling or sex.
  • People who have an addiction to or overusing prescription drugs.
How can a support group help those recovering from addictions?
  • Being with others who are also recovering provides support.
  • Those who are recovering from addictions can learn from those who have been longer in recovery.
  • Being with others further in recovery provides hope that change is possible.
  • Those with an addiction can help others.
  • Those in recovery feel better when they share with a supportive group.
  • Being with a group who are supportive fosters self-esteem.
Responsibilities of members in the support group
  • Provide constructive advice-feedback should be honest, but not intended to hurt.
  • Be prepared to receive honest feedback about yourself from the group.
  • Be on time.
  • Attend regularly and be there for yourself and the group.
  • Be prepared to listen and be open to share your own story.
  • Observe strict anonymity.
