Codependency
Codependency

A Codependent is an individual who is controlled by the addicted person's behaviour.

He or she is usually related to the addicted person, and unwittingly supports or enables the addicted person to maintain the addiction.

This includes codependent behaviour such as "rescuing" the addicted person (eg paying his debts), normalizing the addiction ("his drinking is not that bad, he only drinks to relax"), etc.

Unfortunately, this kind of excessive care-giving behavior maintains the addictive behaviour even though the codependent person might genuinely believe that he or she is being supportive.

Some codependents had parents who were themselves addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

Codependents can find support by attending support groups such as Coda.
