The Effects of Alcohol
Types of Drinkers
Alcoholism is a progressive illness leading to problem drinking, alcohol-related disability and alcohol dependence. A person with drinking problems is referred to as an "alcoholic". Alcoholics find it difficult to control or reduce the amount of alcohol consumed. There is often strong DENIAL about the negative effects of alcohol on their lives. Unless the alcoholic starts working on recovery program, his drinking behaviour will continue to destroy his life.

The Effects of Alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant drug. It has a calming and relaxing effect in moderate amounts but alcohol can also adversely affect judgment and coordination. Alcoholics may also experience hallucinations, fits, and confusion. Long term effects of abuse includes possible liver cirrhosis, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, heart disease, brain and nerve damage. The alcoholic may experience worsening of medical problems, irrational behaviour and increasing isolation, and may even become suicidal.

Types of Drinkers

There are three different types of drinkers:

A social drinker is able to control his drinking and would not miss drinking.
A heavy drinker takes a few drinks everyday but is able to stop if he wants to.
An Alcoholic needs alcohol to function and finds it difficult to stop or cut down even if he wants to.
